Benefits of Honey

Honey is mainly known as a natural sweetener but what many do not realise is that it also has nutritional, medicinal and cosmetic benefits. The sweet golden liquid that comes from the beehive is a popular kitchen staple loaded with antibacterial and antifungal properties that have been used since the days of the Egyptian tombs.

How is honey made?

Honey gets its start as flower nectar, which is collected by bees, who store it in their honey stomach (bees have two stomachs). The honeybees return to the hive and pass the nectar onto other worker bees. These bees suck the nectar from the honeybee’s stomach through their mouths. These “house bees” “chew” the nectar for about half an hour naturally breaking it down into simple sugars and store in honeycombs.  The unique design of the honeycomb, coupled with constant fanning by the bees’ wings, causes evaporation to take place. Once the honey is gooey enough, the bees seal off the cell of the honeycomb with a plug of wax. In one year, a colony of bees eats between 120 and 200 pounds of honey.
