Hay Fever Tips

Hay fever, is when pollen particles come into contact with your eyes, nose, mouth and throat and trigger an allergic reaction. Hay fever is commonly mistaken as a cold because they have similar symptoms and when the body tries to fight it off it is treated like a virus.

The time of year that you begin to get hay fever symptoms can let you know the type of pollen you are allergic to. Hay fever symptoms can vary from year to year depending on your body, weather conditions and the pollen count.

Stinging or tickling sensation in the nose/eyes | Runny nose | Sneezing | Itchy eyes | Watering eyes | Red eyes | Coughing | Breathing difficulties

Tips

  • Get a good nights sleep this can help lower your symptoms

  • Spread a thin layer of vaseline in the lower nostrils to help trap pollen which tries to enter your nose

  • Cut back on dairy

  • Eat a diet high in anti-oxidants (all berries) to boost your immune system

  • Eat food with natural antihistamines (citrus fruit) are great at fighting allergies

  • Sprinkling cayenne pepper on you food can help relieve your symptoms

  • Nettle tea helps to relieve symptoms (start before hay fever season begins)

  • Using local honey all year round can desensitise your body from other pollens

  • Garlic is a great decongestant, contains natural antihistamines and is high in anti-oxidants

  • Emphasise foods rich in vitamins A, B5, C, E also betacarotene selenium and zinc
